Why Sunrise Yoga is the Most Epic Way to Start Your Day

Writer: Sarah B.Sarah B.

Let’s be real: mornings can be hard.

The alarm buzzes, you fumble for coffee, and before you know it, you’re lost in your phone, scrolling through everyone else’s morning instead of creating your own.

Sound familiar?

Now picture this: instead of starting your day in chaos, you’re on the beach.

The sun is slowly rising, painting the sky in soft pinks and golds.

You’re breathing deeply, moving through gentle yoga poses, feeling grounded and at peace.

That, right there, is the beauty of sunrise yoga.

I get it—early starts aren’t for everyone.

But hear me out, because this practice just might change the way you feel about mornings altogether.

Remember, yoga isn’t just about stretching.

It's a sacred way to greet the day, connect with yourself, and honor the world around you.

"In the morning, the atmosphere is full of harmony, and the mind is most receptive. This is the best time for practice." ~Paramahansa Yogananda

It’s peaceful, powerful, and completely worth waking up for.

Before the demands of the day even reach you, you’ve already created space to feel calm, strong, and ready to move through life with ease.

It’s the ultimate act of self-care.

Still on the fence?

Let us show you why sunrise yoga is the vibe you didn’t know you needed—and how you can make it part of your routine without feeling overwhelmed.

Stress? Not today.

Sunrise yoga gives you a natural energy boost by syncing you with the rhythm of the day.

Each deep breath, each stretch, wakes up your body, gets the blood flowing, and suddenly—you're that person who actually looks forward to mornings.

It’s Like Therapy for Your Soul

Imagine this: the sound of waves gently rolling onto the shore, birds singing their morning song, and the soft warmth of the sun rising over the horizon.

Practicing yoga outdoors connects you to nature in a way that feels both grounding and healing.

Plus, science backs it up—spending time in nature reduces stress and lifts your mood.

The American Heart Association says: "Spending time in nature can help relieve stress and anxiety, improve your mood, and boost feelings of happiness and well-being."
A study published in Frontiers in Psychology found that just 20 minutes of contact with nature will lower stress hormone levels.

Your Body Will Thank You

Sunrise yoga isn’t just good for your mind—it’s a game-changer for your body too.

Moving and stretching your muscles first thing in the morning helps improve mobility, build strength, and improve balance.

And honestly?

There’s nothing like flowing through warrior poses with the ocean as your backdrop or trying to balance in tree pose in the sand!

How to Get Started (Without Overthinking It)

So, you’re thinking, "This sounds amazing, but I’m not a morning person."

No worries—we’ve got you. Here’s how to ease into it:

Set Your Alarm (and don’t hit snooze!): Give yourself enough time so you don't feel rushed. The aim is start your mornings with more peace and calm.

Pick Your Spot: Find a peaceful spot—maybe your backyard, a park, or with us at Kailua Beach!

Keep It Simple: You don’t need to do a million poses. Start with seated meditation and focus on your breathing. Observe the sounds and sensations around you. Listen to the birds. Breathe in the new day. Practice the basics like Child’s Pose, Downward Dog, and Sun Salutations.

Let nature be your playlist:  I know we love to listen to music when we workout... well I guess, when we do anything!... But instead, I challenge you to unplug and listen to the brilliant symphony of the birds and the world waking up around you. Research highlighted by the Natural History Museum indicates that certain bird sounds offer relief from mental fatigue and stress, depending on the type of bird and individual associations.

Listening to the rhythmic sounds of ocean waves has been associated with various calming effects on the human mind and body:

  • Stress Reduction: The University of Exeter highlights that being near or hearing the ocean can instill a sense of calm and perspective, contributing to mental health benefits.

  • Lowered Blood Pressure and Induced Relaxation: Researchers have found that listening to water sounds, such as ocean waves, can reduce stress levels, lower blood pressure, and promote a sense of calmness.

Why Sun Salutations Are the OG Morning Routine

In yoga traditions, sunrise yoga often revolves around Suryanamaskar—Sun Salutations. It’s not just a flow; it’s a beautiful way to greet the day with intention and gratitude.

Think of it as your body’s way of saying, “Good morning, world. Let’s do this!”

Here’s how to keep it simple and impactful:

  1. Start Strong in Mountain Pose – Stand tall, feet grounded, and feel that quiet power within you.

  2. Forward Fold – Stretch those sleepy hamstrings while letting your head hang heavy.

  3. Step into a Lunge – Channel your inner morning warrior because you’ve got this.

  4. Plank to Cobra – Engage your core, feel the strength in your body, and lift your chest to the sun.

  5. Downward Dog – Stretch it all out, breathe deeply, and feel the flow.

Repeat as many times as feels good (even just once is enough to shift your energy). It’s quick, energizing, and a reminder that you’re starting the day with mindfulness and strength.

Sun Salutations don’t just wake you up—they connect you to the rhythm of the day. It’s your morning ritual of empowerment, grounding, and movement all in one.
